Third Sunday of Advent

Serving this week: Sharron Davis, Assisting Minister; Jason Hill, organist; Rosemary Schneekloth, keyboard and Live Stream Admin

The Collect/Prayer of the Day

Stir up our hearts, O Lord, to make ready the way of your only-begotten Son, that by his coming we may be enabled to serve you with pure minds; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The Lessons

Zephaniah 3:14-20; Philippians 4:4-7; Luke 3:7-18

Zephaniah tells us in the first lesson: “Sing aloud . . . Rejoice and exult with all your heart!” This Sunday is called “GAUDETE” (“REJOICE”) Sunday; it is also called “Rose Sunday.” The rose-colored candle on the Advent wreath conveys the message of rejoicing. Today we hear some of the O-Antiphons (“O come, O come, Emmanuel . . . Rejoice!). Rose is a softened hue of violet, thus a compromise between the colors symbolizing penitence and joy.
